Mazumans love to volunteer our time with local organizations that uplift our Kansas City community! A consistent favorite is Reconciliation Services, a non-profit focused on “addressing the root causes and symptoms of poverty and trauma” by “engaging with individuals to promote dignity by increasing personal well-being, foster healthy community by transforming dividing lines into gathering places, and help people advocate for themselves, their families, and their neighbors.”
Founded over 30 years ago in an area of Kansas City that has historically been a dividing line between racial and economic groups, Reconciliation Services is dedicated to healing that divide through transformation that reveals the inherent strength of our community and its members. We’re huge fans of the important work they do and were honored to support the capital campaign that helped them open their beautiful, inviting new headquarters building last year!
Thelma's Kitchen
Team Members Rachelle and Kelli recently spent a day volunteering with Thelma’s Kitchen, a Reconciliation Services restaurant initiative that brings people together over fresh and affordable meals. Dishes range in price from $1 to $15, so there’s an option for everyone, and proceeds fund mental health, eviction prevention, ID assistance, and other impactful services. Rachelle and Kelli helped prepare lunch orders in the kitchen and even jumped in to deliver some catering orders!
Rachelle and Kelli had a great volunteer experience!
“Volunteering at Thelma’s Kitchen and Reconciliation Services was not only fulfilling, it was also fun,” Rachelle says. To learn more about volunteer opportunities or sign up to support this incredible organization, click here.
Hike for Reconciliation
Another standout program at Reconciliation Services is their annual Hike for Reconciliation, a 3.1-mile urban hike that educates participants about the history, challenges, and opportunities of Kansas City’s Troost Corridor. Mazuma Team Members have greatly enjoyed this event both as an educational opportunity and a chance to engage with local history in a way that empowers positive change. Look for more information about this year’s hike in the coming months!
Reconciliation Services’ unwavering commitment to revealing and uplifting the resilience of our community is truly remarkable. From fostering empowerment to offering support where it's needed most, they're working to amplify the voices of strength and possibility in our community.
