CU Difference: 2025 Annual Meeting

Mazuma
by Mazuma

As a credit union, we are a proudly Member-owned institution! Our Members are given the opportunity to share their feedback with us year-round, but once a year we host an Annual Meeting at which Members can learn about their credit union’s growth, community support, and ongoing initiatives.

Annual Meeting Recap

This year’s Annual Meeting was held in the Community Room at our Headquarters in Overland Park on Tuesday, May 22nd with a quorum of Members present. Board President Russ Petry welcomed those present and invited Board Treasurer John Lathrop to present the Treasurer’s Report.

“2024 was a challenging year for the entire credit union industry and banking in general,” Lathrop acknowledged, noting that “in spite of this, Mazuma came through the year stronger than before. We saw increases in loans and deposits, and our capital position continues to be very strong. What I am convinced of is that Mazuma continues to be a great place for our Members – we’re here to help you reach your financial goals.”

Next, Mazuma President & CEO Deonne Christensen shared highlights from her Annual Report, remarking that “Mazuma continues to shine and make a significant impact on the communities we are here to serve.” She recognized the importance and contributions of all those in attendance, acknowledging that “This is because of our exceptional Team, our Board, our Supervisory Committee, and you – our Members. We are immensely grateful for your membership, your loyalty, and your support for all the Credit Union is doing – none of this would be possible without your membership.”

Community Partner Testimonies

Christensen then introduced two special guests who spoke about Mazuma’s impact on their organizations and the broader Kansas City community.

Tami Carolan, the Executive Director of Cleaver Family YMCA, shared that “Grants we have received through the Mazuma Foundation have enabled us to stock our food pantries and do monthly food distributions, and several Mazuma Team Members have helped us with those events as well.” Reflecting on last October’s annual Give Back Day, she remarked that “I want to thank Mazuma for coming out. 150 volunteers for an afternoon was huge for us! What sticks out to me also is how much fun you had while making such an impact.”

Another Community Partner representative, Paige Peterson, the Donor Engagement Manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters Kansas City, shared that “Mazuma is one of our oldest and best partners and we feel so fortunate to partner with them. Last year, Mazuma was able to help us create 13 new matches in Kansas City. For 15 years, Mazuma has gone above and beyond to show up for our events and engage their employees to get involved with us.”

The meeting closed with the affirmation of three Board Members - Matthew Cates, Carla Johnson, and Jeff Westmeyer – and a rousing acknowledgement of the vital contributions made by Mazuma’s volunteer Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee members.
